Transforming Lives Through Education
Access to quality education is one of the Sustainable Development Goals put forth by the United Nations as a key factor in escaping poverty and ensuring socioeconomic mobility. Good quality education has the power to change the life of a person, a community, and the future of the planet. It is a fundamental human right of every child, no matter where they are from.
Education is the most empowering force in the world. It creates knowledge, builds confidence, breaks down all barriers, and opens the door to opportunity. For children, it is their key to opening the door to a better life. A good education helps lay the groundwork needed for children to feel confident in their abilities and help them find their passions in life. It also teaches children to stay committed and gives them the ability to think critically and solve problems. Sadly, many children around the world are still deprived of it.
Power of Education- Real-Life Stories
Transforming Lives through Education is the story of Bridge alumni whose lives have been changed through access to good quality education. It is the story of Joyce Katana who attended a Bridge school in Mombasa County and is now a student at Kenyon College, Ohio in the United States. For Peace Kiponda, the story tracks his progress from his Primary school days at Bridge Shanzu academy in Mombasa through his high school days at Avenues the World School in New York, USA.
Melvin Kanaiza is a student at St. Lawrence University in New York. She is an alumnus of Bridge Gachie academy. After sitting for her KCPE exams, Melvin received a scholarship to study at St. Anne’s – Belfield School in Charlottesville, Virginia. In the same year, Vitalis Wekesa received a scholarship to study at the same school. Vitalis is a Bridge graduate who studied and did his KCPE exams at Bridge Road Block Academy in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
Cynthia Meikan was born and raised in Loitoktok, Kajiado County. Coming from a community where girls have been marginalized for a long time, she attended a Bridge academy where she performed exemplary in the KCPE exams and got admitted to St. Brigid’s Girls Kiminini, a girls’ national school. Today, Cynthia is a medical student at the University of Nairobi’s School of Medicine & Surgery.
Dominic Otieno’s journey to becoming a scientist started at Bridge Hollywood academy in Kisumu County. After a stellar performance in the KCPE Exams, Dominic joined Nova Secondary School and sat for his O-level exams in 2019. In 2020, he was admitted to Kenyatta University where he is studying for a degree in Biotechnology.
These inspirational stories are the manuscripts of thousands of children in Kenya. They show the impeccable power of education from a strong primary school foundation and what doors it can open to transform the lives of children who had once lost all hope in life. Transforming Education will encourage children and parents in communities across Kenya to know that they too and their children are capable of achieving their goals despite their backgrounds.
