Learning Through Sport: How EL Play Is Building Skills Beyond the Classroom

Learning Through Sport: How EL Play Is Building Skills Beyond the Classroom

September 24, 2026 Bridge Kenya Team Education

Learning does not happen only in the classroom. For our learners, sport is creating another space to build confidence, work with others, make decisions and develop the skills they need to navigate school and life.

Through our partnership with Enabling Leadership, we are using the Enabling Leadership League Play to create meaningful learning experiences through sport. The programme brings our learners together through football while giving them opportunities to practise teamwork, communication, problem solving, confidence and leadership.

More than a football competition

The League Play is designed to make every game an opportunity to learn.

On the pitch, learners have to communicate with teammates, make decisions under pressure, respond to challenges and work towards a shared goal. These experiences encourage learners to listen to one another, take responsibility and understand the value of working as a team.

For our learners, this means that the lessons from each game extend beyond the final whistle.

They are learning that leadership can mean encouraging a teammate, that teamwork requires communication and trust, and that solving a problem often requires listening to different ideas and working together.

Creating opportunities to grow

Our partnership with Enabling Leadership gives learners an opportunity to develop these skills in an environment that is active, engaging and learner centred.

Through participation, learners can build confidence in expressing themselves, collaborating with others and taking on responsibility. They also learn to navigate both success and setbacks, developing resilience and an understanding that growth comes through experience.

These are important capabilities for learners as they progress through school and prepare to contribute to their communities.

Building skills that go beyond the pitch

At Bridge, we believe that education should equip learners with the knowledge, skills and character they need to thrive.

The EL Play League contributes to that wider learning experience by giving our learners space to practise skills that cannot always be developed through classroom instruction alone.

When learners communicate with teammates, solve problems during a game, support one another and take responsibility for their roles, they are developing capabilities that remain relevant long after the match ends.

Sport becomes a pathway for learning, leadership and personal growth.

Learning, playing and leading together

The value of EL Play lies in creating opportunities for our learners to learn with and from one another.

As they take part in the League Play, our learners are building confidence, strengthening relationships and developing a greater understanding of what it means to work towards a common goal.

Through our partnership with Enabling Leadership, we are continuing to create learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom and help our learners develop the skills they need to participate, lead and contribute in their schools and communities.

For our learners, every game is more than a game. It is another opportunity to learn, grow and lead.
