On International Literacy Day, we join the global community in recognising the transformative power of literacy and its role in creating opportunities for children to learn, grow and reach their full potential.
Learning to read is more than understanding words on a page. It gives children the ability to explore new ideas, ask questions, express themselves and engage more confidently with the world around them. Strong literacy foundations also provide an important building block for continued learning and development.
The role of teachers in building strong literacy foundations
Behind every child learning to read is a teacher who guides, encourages and creates opportunities for them to practise and grow.
In classrooms, teachers play a critical role in nurturing children’s confidence and curiosity. Through daily reading activities, classroom discussions and individual support, they help children develop the foundational skills they need to become confident and lifelong learners.
